Furnace pressure switch error
A pressure switch code means the draft feedback did not match what the control expected: either closed when it should be open at the start, or not closing or reopening during operation. It points to venting, tubing, inducer, wiring or the switch. A technician should test before any switch is replaced.
The pressure switch tells the control whether the inducer has created draft. It is checked at two points: open before the inducer runs, and closed once draft is established. Codes differ by which check failed. On Heil G80CTL Series A, 2 means it stays closed, while 3 and 9 cover low and high stage failing to close or reopening.
This page explains pressure-related codes in general and what to note before service. Exact meanings depend on the brand, model and control, so match your code on its own family page.
Safe checks before calling
- Record the exact code
Write down the full model, serial, LED color and complete pattern through the viewing window. Two, three and nine flashes, or short and long combinations, mean different things, so avoid lumping them together as one pressure code.
- Outdoor vent from the ground
From the ground or another safe spot, look at any visible outdoor vent or intake terminal for snow, ice, leaves or damage. Do not climb, reach in, chip ice or take pipes apart. If it looks blocked or damaged, stop using the furnace.
- Weather and sounds
Note whether the code appeared during strong wind or snow, and whether you heard the small inducer motor start when heat was called. These observations help a technician. A clear outdoor vent does not rule out problems inside.
- Thermostat and grilles
Confirm the thermostat is on HEAT with a setpoint above room temperature, and that room grilles are open. Do not keep raising the setpoint to make the furnace retry while a pressure code is showing.
What a pressure code can point to
Closed when it should be open
If the switch reads closed before draft should exist, the control will not proceed. On Heil G80CTL Series A this is code 2, with blocked tubing or a switch stuck closed listed as possibilities.
Not closing or reopening
If the switch does not close once the inducer runs, or drops open during the cycle, draft was not confirmed. Vent length, size or restriction, wind, combustion air, tubing, inducer, low voltage, wiring or the switch can be involved.
High-stage feedback
Two-stage furnaces may have a separate high-stage switch. On Heil G80CTL Series A, code 9 adds the control relay and gas valve wiring to the same venting and inducer factors as code 3.
Condensate is model-specific
A blocked condensate drain can only be a factor on condensing furnaces, and the check comes from that model's manual. The Heil G80CTL Series A is non-condensing, so a blocked drain is not a verified cause for its codes.
When to call a technician
Call for service when a pressure code repeats or heat does not return, and stop using the furnace if the vent looks blocked or damaged. A technician measures draft and pressure against the manual and checks switch settings, venting, combustion air, inducer, tubing, voltage and wiring. Jumpers, blowing into tubing or tapping the switch are not diagnosis.
Repair quotesCommon questions
Does a pressure switch code mean the switch is bad?
Not necessarily. The code says the feedback did not match what the control expected. Tubing, venting, combustion air, the inducer, voltage and wiring can all cause that, so testing should come before a new switch.
Can I jumper the pressure switch to get heat?
No. The pressure switch is part of the combustion safety chain. Jumpering it, blowing or sucking on the tubing, tapping it, or fitting a switch with a different rating removes protection against venting problems.
Can snow or wind cause a pressure code?
Weather can affect venting, and the Heil Series A chart lists wind among possible factors. Note the conditions and check visible terminals from the ground. A clear-looking terminal does not rule out an internal problem.
