AMERICAN STANDARD DIAGNOSTIC REFERENCE 21 VERIFIED CODES

American Standard furnace error codes

This page covers the three-character display on American Standard Silver S8X1 single-stage gas furnaces. The code meanings come from installation manual S8XB-SVX001-1D-EN (August 2024), which names both Trane and American Standard. Supported models are the seven listed on both the brand's Silver S8X1 page and the manual cover: S8X1A040M3PSCA, S8X1B040M2PSCA, S8X1B060M4PSCB, S8X1B080M4PSCB, S8X1C080M5PSCA, S8X1C100M5PSCB and S8X1D120M5PSCA. PSC is part of the model number, not a motor type; the blower is a nine-tap design. A code reports what the control detected, not a failed part.

How to read the Silver S8X1 display

Read each character exactly, including any decimal point. The display shows codes, not LED flash counts. While running, it switches every two seconds between the operating mode and the requested blower tap (tP1 to tP9), and an error code joins that cycle when present. Modes are IdL (idle), Ht (gas-heat demand), CP1 and CP2 (cooling or heat-pump demand), COf (continuous fan) and dFt (defrost with gas heat). Ht shows the thermostat is asking for heat; it does not confirm the burner is producing it.

What this chart covers and excludes

All 15 fault codes that apply to the S8X1 are listed. Second-stage codes E3.3 and E3.4, and E11's second-stage conditions, are excluded. S8X1A026M2PSCA appears on the brand page but not on the 2024 manual cover, so it is not covered; neither are S8X2, S9 or other control revisions. The manual index shows E07 instead of E7.1 and reverses E2.3; this site follows the main chart. tP blower-tap displays are status, not heat faults.

American Standard Silver S8X1 fault codes

American Standard furnace codes and supported model families
Code or flash pattern Meaning Model family Details
E01Three-character display: E01 Internal control failure

E01 means the integrated furnace control (IFC) has detected an internal failure or an IRQ loss. The fault lies in the control board's own operation.

E2.1Three-character display: E2.1, alternating with status Flame never established

E2.1 means the furnace made three ignition attempts in one heat call and never sensed flame. The control then enters a one-hour lockout.

E2.2Three-character display: E2.2, alternating with status Flame lost after lighting

E2.2 means flame was established and then lost, and this repeated until ten recycles accumulated in one heat call. The control then enters a one-hour lockout.

E2.3Three-character display: E2.3, alternating with status Gas valve not powered

E2.3 means the control did not detect 24 VAC at the first-stage gas valve (MVL) when it was required, ten times in one heat call. The manual index states this backwards; the main chart and detailed page agree.

E3.1Three-character display: E3.1, alternating with status Pressure switch closed

E3.1 means the first-stage pressure switch is closed when the control expects it to be open. The manual notes that the switch itself is usually not the root cause.

E3.2Three-character display: E3.2, alternating with status Pressure switch open

E3.2 means the first-stage pressure switch is open when the control expects it to be closed, so the required draft has not been proven.

E04Three-character display: E04, alternating with status Safety limit circuit open

E04 means one of three safety switches is open: the main thermal limit, a flame rollout switch or the reverse-airflow switch. The code does not say which one tripped.

E05Three-character display: E05, alternating with status Unexpected flame

E05 means the control sensed flame at a time when no flame should be present. It is a safety fault, not a normal operating state.

E6.1Three-character display: E6.1, alternating with status Reversed polarity

E6.1 means the control detected reversed line-voltage polarity at the furnace power supply. It is an electrical supply fault, not a burner fault.

E6.2Three-character display: E6.2, alternating with status Bad grounding

E6.2 means the control has detected a poor ground connection. It points to the furnace's ground path, which needs electrical testing.

E6.3Three-character display: E6.3, alternating with status Igniter circuit fault

E6.3 means the igniter relay has failed or the igniter is open. The detailed diagnostic page also covers a relay stuck closed and an igniter circuit that is open or shorted.

E7.1Three-character display: E7.1, alternating with status Gas valve powered when off

E7.1 means 24 V is present at the first-stage gas valve circuit when it should be off. The manual index lists this as E07; that is a document inconsistency, not a confirmed alternate code.

E08Three-character display: E08, alternating with status Low flame current

E08 means flame current is low, below the 0.5 microamp DC threshold in the detailed diagnostics. The furnace is still allowed to operate; this is not a lockout.

E11Three-character display: E11, alternating with status Gas valve relay fault

On the S8X1, E11 means the first-stage gas valve was not energized when it should have been, or the first-stage valve relay is stuck closed. Second-stage conditions in the chart do not apply.

E12Three-character display: E12, alternating with status Control fuse open

E12 means the 5 A fuse on the control board is open or missing. An open fuse suggests something in the low-voltage circuit drew too much current.

IdLThree-character display: IdL Idle

IdL means idle: there is no cooling, heating or fan demand from the thermostat. The status reflects thermostat inputs, so it is normal when nothing is being called.

HtThree-character display: Ht, alternating with blower tap every 2 seconds Gas heat demand

Ht means the control sees a gas-heat demand from the thermostat. It reflects the 24 VAC input only and does not confirm the burner lit or that heat is reaching the rooms.

CP1Three-character display: CP1, alternating with blower tap First-stage compressor

CP1 means the thermostat is calling for first-stage cooling or heat-pump operation. It is a normal demand display, not a furnace fault.

CP2Three-character display: CP2, alternating with blower tap Second-stage compressor

CP2 means the thermostat is calling for second-stage cooling or heat-pump operation. On the S8X1 this is a normal demand display, not a furnace fault.

COfThree-character display: COf, alternating with blower tap Continuous fan

COf means the thermostat is calling for continuous fan. The blower runs without a heating or cooling call, so register air stays near room temperature.

dFtThree-character display: dFt, alternating with blower tap Defrost gas heat

dFt means the outdoor heat pump has a defrost demand and the furnace is in gas-heat mode during that period. It is a normal demand state, not a fault.
